Hello,

I was looking at purchasing an A4 Avant, 2005, 1.8TQ, and there is an intermittent noise coming from the rear hatch area. To me it sounds like a small compressor coming on. Similar to the air compressor used for the locking system in the mkIII VW Golf/Jettas'.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be? Its not on all the time, and is not dependent on the temperature either. Just seems to kick on randomly.

are you sure it's not under the rear seat. fuel pumps make some noise when they are starting to go. pull the reat seat for a bit and see if you can get a better idea.
