There used to be remote setups, hidden behind the grille. I haven't really seen anything in recent years. There's a strategic advantage to having the detector high-mounted and able to see thru the rear window.

Should you ever visit the Valentine 1 facility in OH, you'll see all the cars in the parking lot, including Mikey's Porsche, have the detector in this location

K40 and Escort make remote setups. I'm sure there are many others. There are also V1 setups where they are installed in Audi/BMW/Mercedes rearview mirrors. Those would certainly fit the location requirement. I emailed Valentine a few years ago as I wanted one of those for my E55AMG but they replied that they don't warrant or support any modification of the V1 apparatus as the shape of the outer case was part of the engineering not just the guts.

The rear view mirror V1's sure look slick tho.

I don't doubt that is the best location for it but I just don't like how it looks inside the car, I don't like that it's a theft magnet and I don't like how cops react when they see you have one.

I'm sure you can find someone to do a remote installation for you, probably would be an Escort.

You could consider the visor clip solution and just take the detector down when you park if that is a concern. That way you've got nothing on the windshield.

I have seen a couple custom installs with the V1 built into the RVM. I don't recall who was doing that work.

With the V1, you are much less distracted as you already KNOW where the threat is and can continue to keep your eyes on the road.

Unfortunately it doesn't work very well in my Audi. It constantly has 2-3 K band alerts running whenever the ignition is on. I thought that maybe it was the side assist but it doesn't seem to have any effect when I turn side assist on/off. I'm wondering if the rear parking radar is also contributing to the alerts.

I don't get any similar problem when I use the same V1 unit in a number of other cars.

It would be no big deal if they were constant but since it keeps adding and losing alerts it is constantly at primary alert volume. Very annoying. And if I'm caravaning with the Audi Club, it goes crazy. I can have 5+ targets driving the detector nuts. It only happens when I'm around other B8's. I can be around other Audi models with no alerts at all.

I haven't tried any other detectors in the car since I got rid of my older detectors when I got my V1 and whenever I ask anyone, it seems they are using a V1 also or have a built-in system.
This is probably a dumb question, but have you contacted V1 about the constant K band alerts? I have a 2011 B8 with my V1 mounted exactly like what is in this post (for about 5 months now) and it works perfect. I don't have the side assist and I have a 6MT if that makes any difference.

I remember way back with another car my V1 was sounding off when I hardwired it to a certain 12V source but was OK when using the lighter plug in. Turned out the way I had routed the telephone wire to the detector was the problem. I think it was going by another wire that wasn't grounded/shielded properly. Can't remember exactly. Hope this helps.

uberwgn, thanks to you (and Elevens)! Your pictures were great. Unfortunately, the ground in the Q5 is not that easy, but I ended up getting one (with a little drilling).

ECS apparently sells the V1 with LIDAR detection...
