ok so yes that piece is fine. i tried putting the car in third gear, then putting on the ****. but the button still wont sprint back and forth on it own . so im guessing i broke something inside. Should the button be in a certain position like all the way pushed in or out when i put the **** on? thank you for you help.

Yes you have to pull the button out and then slide to **** on. If you are not pulling out the button then it will no engage it.
