FYI - I have the ESP/ABS lights on. The Parking Brake Malfunction light is on. The Centre Brake light is on (might need to be replaced). The MIL light is on and the car wont shift unless I let off the accelerator and I have a loss of acceleration.

It turns out it was the camshaft position solenoid valve and it was an easy fix. It took me all of 10 minutes to do and cost me $98 because I bought it from the dealer just to later find it online for $68 shipped (link below). It's held in by 1 star screw. You should examine all four of the camshaft solenoid valves to see if any of them look noticibly damaged (mine was loose around the crimp) or have a mechanic look at them/scan your car to see if he can tell you which one to replace. Mine was in bank 2 on the drivers side on the back of the block. If you are getting the same code then it could be the same one.

Part Number: 06E 109 257 J

Can be purchased here:

Good luck!

FYI: The issue with the solenoid valve was causing the sensor to only get 5V instead of 12V which was causing it to throw the code.

funny thing, mine JUST SHOWED UP NOW after getting every maintenance done. I cleared DTC codes and see if it comes back again.

lotz, can you possibly post a pic to see where these solenoids actually are? Thanks a bunch.

also, there are other posts (don't have bookmarked handy--maybe someone else does)...about the screen mesh in these getting horked up.

I've just experienced this symptom yesterday with my 2006 A6 V6 3.2 FSI. The rough idle sound disappeared after a bit of throttling, but reappeared every time the engine started.

I managed to fix the issue by unplugging, cleaning and reconnecting the two cam tensioner sensors. There was actually a bit of oil/moisture on one of them. They are located adjacent to the spark plug coils. Their cables came from the same spark plug leads. Thankfully, the problem is solved. The fault code hasn't appeared again and the rough sound/misfire at the start has gone.

I hear rattling sound from cold start sometimes but no misfires. It runs really well. Do you think it's still timing off?

If you are hearing rattling sound during a cold start-up, your upper timing tensioners are probably at their limits. Using VCDS or other OEM compatible scan tool, you should check the camshaft angle. If the sum of the exhaust and intake values exceed ~7-8 degrees on either bank (assuming you have the 3.2L V6 engine), then that is a clear sign that the tensioners need to be replaced.

Ok thanks. Ill check that out but I did an engine rebuild. I replaced all the chains and tensioners and I did the timing job with the timing chain set tool. If the value exceeds I still need to replace the upper timing chain tensioner?
