A8 D3 Adding additional key
Guys,
I am trying to add a new key to the car. Getting several ways to do so and can't get any of them to work. Does anyone know what to do?
Here is what I found so far
Audi-Resource - Key Fob Matching
Ross-Tech: VAG-COM: Remote Control Matching Info
DIY: How to program your Audi flip key fob.
Ok, so I went to the dealer today
They said they could not program this key because it is not an A8 key, is there any difference? This picture is P/N 8E0837220L

I've researched this matter almost to exhaustion.
For the A8 4E 2003-2009, Q7 and A6 4F at least, you need either to go to the dealer, he connects the car to the VAS Computer, and with that to the factory server, and updates they new key to the car.
They will charge anything from zero to 100€, depending on if you need something else done with the Computer at the same time.
It IS possible to do this offline too, with a tool called "abrites", but that costs like 1500€+++ depending on software etc.
This key matching is NOT possible to do with VCDS or any rosstech software on our cars!

Meanwhile, back to OP's original question and pic...
Yes, as noted only dealer can program keys for all practical purposes. But, maybe everybody else missed it, but that picture is not a D3 key. D3 keys are basically symmetrical in all dimensions. The one in your picture has one side that is curved inward. I don't know all the variants, but that strikes me as maybe a Q7 or C6 A6 type key. Gotta get at least the right electronics fob to even start to play here.

it is a B7 A4 key, may also be used on the Q7 and A6.
I know the B6 guys can "upgrade" to this B7 key because the modulus are the same between the B6 and B7. Though the dealer will never help you with this issue.
In an A8 i don't think you would ever be able to change key fob unless you deactivated the immobilizer somehow and loose the push start.

Seems like a no go

When I dealt with even year 2000 pre-immobilizer keys on my C5 A6, they were also still very finnicky at the exact part number level, even if the fob looked the same otherwise. FWIW, you can mail order both the fob and the cut key from a mail order dealer if you send in your registration with your name on it. Or buy a known good looking D3 fob from EBay and then just order the cut key component from the dealer. You still have to pay for programming, but it cuts the cost down. Dealers charge me the same regardless of how many keys, so when I do it (typically near new), I have them do a couple at same time.
