G12 vs G13
Hello, everyone!
I was planning to change my coolant and went to Audi to buy G12 fluid (I was hoping to get G12 ++ ), but instead they told me from now on they have G13 only. Apparently we can mix G13 with G12 but not G12 with G13. That is beyond of my understanding.
Does anyone has any inside info if it is safe to add G13 to G12 ?
Thanks!
Victor

Some info on Audi coolants:
Buried in this ECS document is a bit about G13 rationale--bottom of p 6: http://bd8ba3c866c8cbc330ab-7b26c6f3...s_Glycerin.pdf
I'm not sure so far there are big differences from G12++ to 13 that matter to the owner, other than they seem to price it somewhat less in bulk. That suggests it may be less costly to make.
I expect you can easily find G12++ too if you want it. Sold under the Pentosin brand pretty widely. Both ECS and AutohausAZ have it on the web for starters, and I think even the corner O'Reilley's parts place stocks it now.
I think Audi probably still sells it as well, but just in the 1.5L bottles and not in the gallon jugs. Last I checked, they still had it for the W12, and the W12 spec remained at G12++ unlike the other motors.
BTW, if you really have old G12 in your car--as opposed to more current G12++ (you might have just been short handing)--I would change that out. Original G12 did not have silicates, unlike old G11 and all the newer ones. They touted it first as a great thing at introduction, but then quietly deep sixed it when they saw increased HVAC heat exchanger wear (as in, leaks). There is actually an old TSB about the heat exchanger and coolant specific to the D3. VR6's (and potentially their big cousin, the W12) can also have increased head wear in a key coolant passage from some obscure web threads I've read over the years. Underneath, silicates help metal self heal from wear or damage, hence why it's back again. Old straight G12 (with no +'s) is thus both obsolete and sub par.

Thanks everyone!
My original coolant is G12+ filled on factory for my A8 2007.
It is 6 years old and 70K Km.
I think it make sense to replace it. But for some reasons I cannot find the volume in the A8 2007 4.2 BVJ engine. On my old V8 it was 8.5 liters. I hope they have the same here as well.
If someone knows the actual volume it will be great to share the number!
Thanks a lot everyone!
