Timing help
OK to start with I'm a Audi owner of many for many years. 1984 4000s, 1985 4kq, 1985 5000s turbo, 1989 100 quattro, 1991 200 turbo quattro, 1992 4.2 V8 quattro, and now a 1998 A6 Avant 2.8 quattro C4.
This A6 is giving me trouble. I can do anything i want with the others, but this A6 man I have to learn the car.
i have had this car for a year has been a good car lots of little things go wrong nothing to big. Yesterday i drove a 1/2 hour parked for about 2 hours. Went to start it and no go, I have had all of other cars do this to me at one time or another and have always been able to figure out but not this one!!! had it towed home. Here is a list of tests I had done.
it has no spark no fuel in the cylinders, but fuel pressure going to the rail. checked timing by eye, the big holes on the cam are strait across when the timing mark on the front pulley is dead on, but I can not get the #1 cylinder to hit TDC with the other markers lined up??? and I do not know where the crank lock port is on this car?? Compression test was good High 170 low 150 on a cold motor close to being with in 10% I unhooked the battery for 10 minutes made no difference.
I do have someone coming sometime this week to pull codes, he said could pull Audi specific codes.
My main question is how could the #1 piston be off from the marks on the crank shaft pulley?? is the #1 piston supposed to be at TDC when the Marks are lined up?? Everything look to be in the right place but that piston??

TDC doesn't mean that Cylinder # 1 is at TDC on this engine. IIRC, it is Cylinder # 3 that really is at TDC with the mark. For clearer guidenace on the crank lock location and procedure for R&R the timimg belt, try here:

Note that the write–up says that the crank position sensor is on the right side of the engine, but it really is located on the driver's (left) side.
