Well my Ross-Tech VCDS arrived.
As far as scanning for codes it was the same as the Autel, just provides a nicer report.
The big difference, once the VCDS highlighted the error, I was able to use the program to remap the throttle body alignment and got the car started. The other code scanner found the problem but that's the end of it.

So the Autel VAG505 is a good "glove box' VAG code reader, but the VCDS provides basic fixes. Hope this helps your decision.
