Driving to Seattle via Hwy 1. Any suggestions?

SF to Seattle via 1 in a long day? It's 16 to 18 hours of very twisty road w/o stops
From a safety standpoint, that might be more than is prudent. If it were interstate, I wouldn't hesitate to try.

Taking I5, SFO --> PDX is 9 hours at a reasonable pace, 10 if you stop regularly for pit stops
and lunch. SFO --> SEA is 12 or 13 hours, under the same conditions.
Either is a long day and that's the direct route. Besides the safety considerations that April mentions, IMHO there's no point in taking the scenic route if you're just going to blow right through. Not only will the back roads and pace just beat you up even more, you'll miss the sites that you presumably wanted to see in the first place.
If you do run out of steam, you might not find yourself anywhere where stopping overnight is even an option.
Whatever you decide, have a fun and safe trip.

Bear in mind we've got 2-3 drivers but based on these recommendations we'll go up to the CA / OR
border this trip and then when we drive the other car up in May, go do the lower Oregon coast.

A few drivers will certainly help. On the other hand, this isn't a trip you should rush.
Just for giggles, we've hopped in the Alfa at 10am, arrived in Eureka by nightfall, then turned back around the next day after a morning of chillaxing in town. A 20yo V6 Alfa sedan isn't as fast or civilized as the Audi, so we don't get many chances to stop, but on the other hand it's nice to drop the windows and be a part of the scenery;-)

Oregon Coast is worth three days easy
I usually take 5-6 days driving it on my vacations, mixing camping with staying at motels.
Then cross the Columbia at Astoria and go up the Washington Coast through the Olympics - that's worth a few more days.
