A couple of things. One, S mode is no different than D mode except the throttle is more sensitive to accelerator pedal input and gears will hold longer in upshifts and downshifts. There is no magic extra horsepower using S mode. Two, the engine rev limiter will prevent over reving in any gear the same way in S or D. The transmission and engine and, for that matter, the rest of the car, don't care what speed you are driving in either S or D so long as you are don't exceed red line in any gear (which as I wrote above is impossible due to the rev limiter) - speed itself is irrelevant. So switching between the two modes can be done any time and the tranny will adjust to the correct gear as required based on revs and speed. The software is designed to not hurt your pipes.

Where these sales guys come up with this kind of urban legend nonsense is beyond me.
