It's true, buying something a couple years old tends to work out pretty well. I recently calculated my "monthly payment" on my old Acura TL, which I bought in Dec. 2009 for $15,000 and sold in June 2015 for $11,000.
That meant it cost me about $53/month in depreciation. Not a bad deal.
I replaced it with a 2010 S4 that I paid $28,000 for. (B&O, Nav, Sport Diff, 19" peelers)
(Paid cash for both cars, so no financing charges to factor in.)

Watch out on holding onto a car for too long though.
With my previous A4, I held onto it until KBB value was basically nothing (I think KBB said it was worth $1500.) Miraculously I was able to sell it for about $3000 because it was in great shape.
1997 A4 1.8T, bought it for $10k, sold it for $3k. Owned it for 10.5 years so depreciated at $56/month. So I guess not too bad there either.

I didn't end up buying the car I've described here. After reflecting on it a bit more, I wanted something under warranty and a little less beat up. I ended up picking up a 2013 CPO with 35k miles. I've posted my experience driving it home here: Bought a 2013 S4 from 3rd party in TX and drove it home to MD. My experience (long)
(sorry to link a competing site. I'm a big fan of AW, but it seems like most of the B8 S4 traffic has gone there)

That site is a lot more, shall I say "unforgiving" unless you are tuned to Stage 9 and running on JP#5.
