Audi A6 C5: How to Replace the ABS Module

The ABS module is the brain behind your Audi A6 C5's ABS system. Learn how to replace it here.

This article applies to the Audi A6 C5 (1997-2004).

The ABS module in the Audi A6 C5 is the computer that operates its ABS system. It processes the information from your wheels, which then determines when the brakes lock up so it can do its job and release the brake pressure when needed. If your engine diagnostic code reads a bad ABS control module, it's recommended you don't try to fix it. Replacing it is a simple process that requires basic tools and mechanical skills. If you know you need to replace your ABS module, then read on to get started.

Materials Needed

  • T20 Torx screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • New ABS control module

Step 1 – Unclip connector

With your hand, pull the plastic piece on the side of module to unplug the connector.

Step 2 – Remove clips

Remove the two clips holding the control unit in place. There will be a clip facing the front of the car and another facing the rear of the car. Push up on the clips' tab with a flat head screwdriver, and it will come right off.

Step 3 – Unplug pressure sensor

Remove the pressure sensor from the side of the module. Just push on the plastic tab on the electrical connection, and pull it out.

Step 4 – Replace module

Pull the whole unit up to make room so you are able to remove the module from the unit. Using your T20 Torx screwdriver, remove the six Torx screws holding the module in place, then pull the module straight out to remove. Install the new module the same way, then tighten the six screws. Install the electrical connection on the back of it, then put the unit in place. Push the two clips in place to lock the unit. Finally, plug the connector on the side of the module by pushing it down into the unit.
