I think I added a little several years ago, nothing more on my '96 A6 Avant.

Default Groaning?

Foam? Maybe some sort of contamination? Maybe the pump is going bad and whipping air into the hydraulic fluid? Maybe the rack? I wish I knew.
Sometimes I hear a bit squealing or moaning from the rack or pump when I drive around the first corner in the morning.

I'm groaning because my nipple clamps cracked my nipples.

Directly on the nipples or on the nipple clamps?

Default Foamy fluid = air getting in system

Believe me, I've just spent a lot of $$$ on mine. I had to replace my pump, a hose going from the cooler to the resevoir, several hose clamps, seals , & a banjo bolt. some of my lines were so loose, that I pulled the hoses off of their connections with the clamp still on it.

Your pump may be on its way out if its groaning. After trying three pumps, I ultimately ended up buying a rebuilt one from a dealer in Oklahoma City (Bob Moore Infiniti, Audi, Porsche) that was very accomodating for $211 + $65 core charge. If you end up needing a new pump be VERY certain that the hose fitting configuration on the right side of the new pump (as you're looking at it) is identical to the one you have now. There are two models out there for 96 A4's. On one, the fitting is angled upward (as mine is); on the other, it goes straight out to the side. HTH.

Default Yep, she's groaning

It has been going on for quite sometime, it occurs only when the car is cold. No other time. The fluid isn't always foamy either. I figure I should get a new pump soon. As far as the rack, it has never leaked, could I still need a new rack? and as always thanks for everyones help.

Default She's moaning when cold?

Warm her up then. :-P

My Buick had a steering rack that was shot, but it wasn't leaking at all, so suppose the rack can go bad an doesn't necessarily leak.
