Does anyone else run 87 octane instead of the recommended 91 minimum?
I was curious if it was really necessary to run at least 91 octane. Here in TX we've got 87, 89, & 93. I usually run 93 but since there is such a stiff price on it, I'm starting to think about just running 87 octane. Any ideas if this is bad for the motor?
I drive a 96 a4 12V if it makes a difference.

I have
Didn't notice much difference. I usually put the 89 10% ethanol crap in my car though... I don't know why I do because the worse fuel economy from the 10% ethanol gas doesn't offset the savings at the pump.

crazy, in my opinion.
to each their own, however, having owned my b4 12v for about three years or so, i put 87 in it for the first 2 days, and after that, 93 only. In fact, I began testing (simply by driving and coming to personal conclusions) different gas from the time I began using 93. after a few weeks of differents I have since only fueled-up using Shell V-Power. If I am really, really strapped for cash I may use mid-grade, (maybe) which in my area is 89, but even then I use the Shell only, and still curse myself for using anything less than the V-Power.
Im sure there are people who diagree or say it doesnt matter or what have you, but this, as I have stated, is my opinion based on my personal findings in relation to MY/95/B4/12v...and Im stickin' to it.

in cooler weather 87 is marginal. 89 would be better. In TX during summer...
and 90-100F+ temps the car will run so much retarded ignition timing with 10:1 compression and even on 89 octane you'll use more fuel than the difference in price per-gallon makes and lacking near 12% of your engines published HP figures.

I have been using the Fitch Fuel Catalyst for 21,000+ miles.......
while using the cheapest fuel at the gas station.
I have not noticed any difference at this point. I have not put in 91 octane in the tank since 9/21/2004, only 87 octane.

http://www.fitchfuelcatalyst.com/</a

I've been using 87 for a few weeks now. I didnt notice a difference initially, but since it is
warmer in NY I am noticing some loss of power. I have yet to note the mileage difference since I havent filled it up on 87 yet. I'll probably used 93 for the summer.

Only when I am broke, or I pull up to a place with an empty tank and their prices stink
I'll get like $5 to $10 and drive to another gas station with prices I know are less.
My car hates, and I mean hates 87. She can deal with 89, but loves 93. She really likes Sunoco 93, but Shell and Texaco will do. Mobil not so much.

91/93 only, usually Shell V-power. Gas before food. Haha.
In my completely un-scientific experience, the increase in fuel economy and performance has well offset the increased price of "premium" gasoline.
