Audi 3366 Tool (Cam Tensioner Tool)

For those that have used the cam tensioner tool, is it really needed? I've read nothing but terrible comments on its design and engineering. Can I just use a regular allen bolt on a ratchet to get the job done?

The tool is absolutely needed.

I don't think I was going to be able to do the job without it.
