Default Does the 2005 A6 4.2L have Timing belt or chain?

I have a 2005 A6 4.2, and I'm trying to find out if this car has a timing belt or a timing chain. The maintenance booklet does not mention any thing about replacing the timing belt at any maintenance interval. I called different Audi dealers about this and got mixed responses: some said the car has a timing belt, others said timing chain which never needs replacement. So does any one know for sure what it is? Thanks in advance.

CHAIN. And when it goes, it's big bucks. My quotes are $8,500 and $11,000 at two different dealers. '05 A6 4.2L

Its pretty lame that they thought going to a chain would be life of engine no worrys about timing stuff. but they apparently suck badly at chain drive systems and they basically have the same failures that the VR6 chains since the beginning. W8, 4.2, 3.2s all have known timing chain tensioner, guide, or chain failure about 100k. Might as well have put a damn timing belt....oh and they were nice enough to put the chains on the rear of the engine so transmission or engine must be removed. Brilliant.

Are we yet at the point where we realize that Japanese engineers are more concerned about making cars work well and efficiently as opposed to German engineers who seem intent on proving their intellects to be "superior?!" Engine has to be removed for maintenance - brilliant!
