Default Actually ... both
In the 4.2L of the D2 A8/S8, a belt drives the exhaust camshafts from the crankshaft, but the intake cams are chain driven off of the exhaust cams. Only the belt gets replaced.

And D3s have a timing chain, instead of that belt like on our D2s.

A6 has the D2 version w/ belt, S4 has the D3 version w/ chain.

Default And the C6 A6 V8 is the D3 version with chain.
Boy, that's a lot of gobbledygook letters and numbers, to most. Heh.

Default Oh, and just to confuse things further, the C5 allroad V8 has the chain engine, as in the
C6 A6, D3, and B6S4.

Surprised the heck out of me, when I learned that. Couldn't believe Audi had put both the belt and the chain engine in the C5 platform.
