'96 A4 Performance Mods
I have had my A4 since new and it is (unfortunately) still stock. I would like to change that and need some recommendations. What can be done to improve performance without going crazy on cost? I am told that the K&N filter and a new exhaust are two good mods to start with.

This place has mods for the 2.8 12v
I started with suspension and have since added a B&M Shortshifter.

http://www.tdlracing.com</a

Re: '96 A4 Performance Mods (long)
I also have 96 2.8Q, a 12v. Unfortunately your options for mod-ing engine performance on the 12v are quite limited. There are many reasons including the Hitachi chip. As Mr. D says TDL has some options, but they are quite expensive. If you are committed then they might be worth it.
Other things people have done are throttle body (there is a Tech FAQ on it) and air filter.
For more info on the 12v check out:

Also, there are several others on the board who have quite a bit experience with the 12v.
Good Luck.

"Quite Expensive" compared to What? Have you priced BMW normally aspirated mods lately?!? . . .
Lloyd at TDL kicks *** in the cheap department. You will not find quality parts much cheaper than at what Lloyd sells them. If you want them cheaper, the quality will suffer.
Additionally, chips, turbos, FMIC, silicone hoses, fuel injectors, down pipes, exhaust, this and that on the 1.8t and you have sunk several thousand dollars into the car and also raised it into the 240 hp range--estimate $3000, yet, turbos only last so long before they fail.
Normally aspirated mods generally last the life of the car and cause no where near the wear and stress on the engine. On a turbo, you can dial up the boost only so much before parts start to fail and/or need upgrading. While the 1.8t has a robust engine block, it's the supporting "infrastructure" that needs upgrading.
I have invested about $1000 into my 12v engine and it makes at least as much power as the stock 30v, likely more at some RPM. With another $1500-2000 in parts, I will have up to another 30 hp--Comparable price to bring the 150 and 170 hp 1.8t's to similar 220+ hp.
I strongly believe TDL mods do not cost that much for the quality and performance you get from them, especially as TDL mods normally aspirated engines which just cost more to modify due to the physics involved.
