'99 Accord (2.3l 150HP) vs A4 1.8T (long)
Over the weekend, I went on a trip to Sequoia National park from LA in a '99 Accord stick with 150 HP.
I do not understand why there is so much hype made about Hondas!! There really isn’t allot excitement in driving a Honda. It's often referred to as the Japanese sport sedan but I have to say that I was pretty disappointed. First of all fit&finish is not as excellent as people always say. The car is 9 months old and has 12kmiles on it and already rattles and squeaks!! The engine did not feel like 150Hp and 2.3l at all. When flooring in 5th gear on the freeway at 65 mph almost nothing happens! It takes forever until you get to 80 and up. I guess the reason for it is the long gear ratio but it definitely makes the car sluggish. Another thing I really did not like was the engine noise at RPM’s above 3500. Loud and not pleasant! Compared to my 1.8TQMS we are talking of several classes of difference.
Another thing that is very obvious is how cheap Honda tried to make the car. You can find evidence for it everywhere. The trunk lid hinges is another example! Where the A4 has this sophisticated mechanism to ensure nothing moves into the trunk when you close the lid Honda has a lame and cheap construction that interferes with your luggage.
Has anyone of you ever felt the ’99 Accords steering wheel? It is so thin and large that you think it’s from an old car of the seventies. No comparison to the beautiful sport wheel in my A4!
What I’m getting at is paying more for an Audi definitely buys you allot! Maybe long-term reliability is better with the Honda (something I am not even so sure of) but I could not drive a car like that on a daily basis and be happy with it!
I am glad that I did not buy an Accord (something I had considered for a while) and instead got this real incredible A4 that is a joy to drive on any occasion!

Not a 10K difference...
more like 6K, less when you consider the difference in equipment. One of my co-workers purchased an Accord at about the same time as I bought my A4, his was $22K, mine $28K. That 6K also bought a lot of additional equipment that you can't get on a Honda: such as Quattro, a turbocharged engine, and automatic climate control.
