In Boulder, for instance, you could expect to get a 98 2.8 Avant with 30k miles for $20k, but a 1.8t actually costs almost the same because they're rarer. If you're in an area where that seems to be a great deal for a 2.8 do it- with a thorough mechanic's checkup, of course. The 2.8 is a pretty tank-y engine- it'll hold up if it isn't abused.

I got my 98 for $18k w/ 50k miles...

It was delivered in July of 1997, so it has over 4 years on the road. I don't think 62K in four years in all that high.
