Default Anyone else find the auto transmission a bit sluggish/slow to respond?

I am a bit disasppointed with the automatic transmission on my '98 2.8Q, particularly in highway driving when I have to brake quickly and then accelerate again to catch up with the cars in front. I wonder if there's some fine tuning I need to do (suggestions?), or if this is just the price you pay for being foolish enough to have automatic transmission. (I assume the unresponsiveness is a transmission issue, but maybe not.)

Default Tiptronic does help

I thought Tiptronic was sort of a gimmick, and I wasn't intending to use it much after 20 years of driving a stick shift. (Ahh ... rest that left foot.) But I do find I use Tiptronic around town, just to keep in gear 3 instead of the auto's selection of gear 5 at 40 mph. Revs are really low in gear 5 at that speed, so there's a big lag in accelerating. I'd rather keep it about 2500 in normal city driving, and Tiptronic makes that easy.

Default Agreed. I do the same thing.

True, launching and accelerating might not be as fast w/ the manual, but I love my tiptronic.

Default are you aware of the "kickdown" feature? (more)

also, if you drive cautiously, the computer will stay in economy mode. if you step on the throttle hard (constantly), the computer will adapt and put you into sport mode

Default Isn't "kickdown" just flooring it for maximum acceleration?

I do it sometimes, but the engine roar suggests to me that it takes a toll on the car if you overdo it.

Default you can floor it, AND...

once the pedal reaches the floor, you can step on it further (it'll click). that's the kickdown ;-)

try it with the engine off. press the pedal down w/ you hand and check it out.

Default Keep it in 4 instead of D ...

this locks out 5th and changes the shift map a bit.
