Audi Control Module
When I had my '99 A4 1.8T Quattro in for service I asked the dealer to change the Control Module with the codes I found in the Audi World FAQ.
Simply, I wanted the auto-locking doors and window control feature from the remote. The tech I spoke with was not aware of the codes but said he would talk to someone about it.
When I picked up my car the tech informed me that they were not permitted to change the code because of a directive by Audi. He said that Audi was concered about potential law suits in the U.S. if the doors would not unlock after a crash and that is why the auto-locking option is not enabled, by default.
I have seen posts where people state their dealers did this for them so what gives? Is my dealer blowing smoke my way?

Yes. Gee, there's a shock! ;^)
Tell him to look up Technical Service Bulletin 98-07. Get a copy yourself at:

It's right there in black and white. Note that Audi will recode once for free under warranty.
Go back and hopefully you'll actually get some service from your dealer next time.

What upsets me most is that they agreed it was poor customer service but did not offer anything as compensation. Hell, I don't know what I would want but it's the principal...
