Default Audi engineers seem to be morons. An unturnable flywheel???

They designed our flywheel to be "unturnable" meaning they can't remachine the surface when they install a new clutch. I'm sure most of you already know this, but I wasn't aware and my mechanic wasn't either. Instead of paying the $590 (!!!!) for a new flywheel I am going to try using the old one, if it messes up... then I'll sink my money into a new one. The mechanic said thats what he'd try himself... after the jingle of trying to sell me a new flywheel. $590!!! That's a lot of money!

There's gotta be a good reason Audi engineers did this other than to force us to buy another flywheel every time we change our clutch out... anyone have any ideas?

Default I would think, because it can cause the flywheel to become unbalanced, and introduce

unwanted harmonic imbalances, and the material face is thin to reduce weight.

Default I have ...

BMW's and allot of german cars are like this. Not sure why, however i did indeed have my flywheel resurfaced. The import shop i went to had a method he had been using. I had hot spots on my wheel and basically what he did was tap very small hole in the flywheel so it could be mounted and resurfaced. I can't remember exactly how this works, but I've been driving for 15K and i'm fine. Call around i bet someone has done this.

Default Other cars seem to get along just fine tho.

Of course, I'm sure the German engineers know something I don't.

Default my dealer's service department said it can be resurfaced...

and my independent mechanic, when informed of this, checked with a machine shop that said that they'd be able to as well.

Default if told by service mechs then thats their standard line - they replace stuff =)

i dont think any car company would suggest that single blocks of precision machined metal can be serviceable.
personally, i would try resurfacing the flywheel only if it doesnt look too bad. but since tranny work is a bit of a hassle i would definitely consider a new one or even an upgraded unit
