Default Borbet C type & 225/50 SP8000 problem: Follow up

This is a quick THANK YOU to everyone who helped me out last week with my Borbet C type wheel and SP8000 problems. For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, I bought a package of C type rims, 16”, with 225/50/ZR16 SP8000s from a tire/wheel shop in NJ. Upon installation, everything looked OK, but when I got home I noticed that the tires stuck way out of the fender, almost by 1 inch in front but less so in back. I had to replace the tires with 205/55/ZR16s which look a lot better. So, a word of warning to all those who want the 225s on the 16” Borbet C-types: DON’T!!!! It looks horrible, like a lowrider. Ugh.
Now come all the thank yous: extra-special thanks to CraigB for all his invaluable help with my dilemma, especially all the great pictures you sent! Also RichW in NJ who helped me “vent” and provided me with some useful info. And finally, everyone at the Forum who offered their support and information.
So, anybody want a “cheap” set of 225/50/ZR16 SP8000s with less than 100 miles on them who lives in the NYC metro area? Contact me!
Rob

Default What WAS the problem? Sounds like your offset (more)

switching 205 to 225 on stock wheels is ok, looks good. if 225s did not fit your car but 205s do, I'd say the wheels stick out too much: bad offset.
sorry

Default Actually a bit of everything... read on

1. Offset: it's 30mm on the Type Cs in 16". I would have preferred 35-40 but hey, I don't make the wheel. I wanted the C types because they looked great, sorta like the mucho expensive A!avantgarde wheels.
2. Here are the facts on the 225s and the 205s; readings are the section width and "tread width", cortesy of CraigB (thanks again Craig!)
SP8000 205/55/16 - 8.1 - 7.2
SP8000 225/50/16 - 8.9 - 8.5
So now you can see why they stick out of the fenders. Sort of an expensive way to goof up.
3. I only lost about $20 on the whole shebang by selling the tires back to the dealer for $5 less per tire. I can live w/ that.
4. Now the car looks and handles MUCH better. Now, all I need is the exhaust and I'm set. Rob
Default Offset problem?

Here is what I understand about the offset:
1. Stock tire is 7" wide and 16 dia. Offset is 45mm(as I read here on the forum.)
2. The Borbet wheels have a offset of 30mm - this is 15mm differnece from stock. The offset is defined as the difference from the certerline of the wheel (3.5" in from either side for the 7" rims) to the attachment point of the wheel.
Thus if the offset is reduced by 15mm (0.6") the wheel will stick outward by 0.6" more than the stock wheel. This means the Borbet will stick out 0.6" more than the standard wheel. That coupled with the wider tire created the problems.
3. For a 17x8" wheel with a offset of 35mm - the wheel will stick out an additional 0.5" from the wheel centerline + the difference of 10mm (45 -35mm) 0.4" and would equal 0.9" further out.
4. I wonder what the difference is for the R-28s with their 8 -1/2" widths??
Reggie
98.5 30vQMS

Default More...

Borbet Type C are 7.5" wide in 16" and 17" (both are ET30), so they stick out 0.84" further than stock wheels.
I believe the 17" Ronal R-28s are ET34 (someone correct me, if I'm wrong). This put the 17" R-28 1.18" further out than stock. HTH.
CraigB
