Default Break-in period question

My new 2000 A4 has about 700 miles on it. The manual really doesn't say much about break-in other than not beating the engine for the first 1000 miles. When I bought it my salesman warned against constant speeds for the first 500 miles. But I am going on a 400 mile road trip this weekend (mostly highway driving). Would you recommend using a new A4 for this trip?

BTW, I would have searched the archives for break-in information, but the search feature seems to be unavailable. Thank you in advance.

Default

just keep in in the mid-RPMs, you don't want to wind it up too much.

Thanks, I've been trying to keep the RPM's below 4000 during normal driving. It's hard though because I want to see what the engine can really do! I can't wait until later.

Default You're fine, enjoy

The A4 excels at highway cruising, enjoy the trip. You're past the 600 mile point so you can wind it all the way out. Do try to avoid staying at the same engine speed for too long, alternate between 4th and 5th every half hour or so. Besides, the 400 miles will take you out of the break in period, and you can have some real fun on the last leg.
Regards,
Rodney

Default The most important thing is to vary the engine speed on your trip...

Default Vary the RPMs

You can change gears but drive the same speed as long as you vary the RPMs to break in the car smoothly. Don't go above 6000 RPMs, though.
Chris Z

Default You were right the first time

He's past the 600 mile mark and needs to start spedning some time in the 4000-6000rpm range. Not a lot, but gradually approaching normal driving habbits.
Regards,
Rodney
