Can I put an S4 instrument cluster in my A4?
You car is old style and it doesn't have CAN-BUS
I am just checking ETKA and it tells me that the cluster he sells is for cars with CAN-BUS,
the best way is to removed your cluster and check for second digits
like 8D0 919 035 N is non-CAn-BUS
if your second digit is 919 then it won't work
I'm new to the forum, sorry if I violate any rules, just wanted to understand compatibility between s4 and a4 instrument clusters. Have read the thread on comparing a4 clusters just needed to be sure.
I have a 2001 a4 b5.5 1.8T tiptronic with a km/h cluster (part no. 8D0920930N). I'm not able to start the car as there's not current flowing from keyhole to immobilizer I've been told.
Having issues looking for an exact similar cluster here in Malaysia as used parts for this model are limited. Came across one on Ebay disassembled from a 2000-2002 s4 2.7T manual with part number 8D0920930G, what's the difference between N and G? Not sure if this works on my model, appreciate any advice from you guys here. Many thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Aaron

The differences were mainly cosmetic.
1) The B5 S4 cluster has white needles with a red backlighting, whileas my B5 A4 cluster had white backlighting and red needles
2) The tach on the S4 cluster is x100 versus the A4 x1000
3) The B5 S4 cluster is always illuminated, even if you have the lights turned off. The B5 A4 cluster is only illuminated when your lights are on.
The is one change you will need to make. You will need to recode the B5 S4 cluster to get the RPM to display correctly on an A4. There's different coding for the S4 versus 1.8T A4 tach... See the vagcom section on the A4 for details.
I actually took the S4 cluster, recoded it for the A4, but took out the gauge face plates from my A4's cluster and placed that inside the S4's cluster. That way, it still looks like I have an A4 cluster (and am not trying to be a poser), except now my cluster has red backlighting and it's always on.

Mate,
You're the best! Thanks for the prompt reply, it's a big relief knowing it can be done and that someone has done it before. I'm proceeding with the purchase. Can I get your advice on calibrating the rpm on vag please? Or if you can direct me to a suitable source that'll be much appreciated. Thanks so much!
