Chip my A4 w/ 73,000 miles?
Hi there,
I have a 1998.5 A4 FWD 5-spd 1.8T. Considering chipping it but not sure if factory original turbo can handle additional psi after 73k miles of wear and tear. Would chipping the car at this point in it's life potentially damage the turbo since it's not exactly "brand new"?
Your advice is appreciated!

good job!
Okay, to answer your question...the car should be fine if you chip it. Obviously, you're pushing the turbo harder, and it may fail earlier, but I don't think the difference in longevity of the turbo will vary all that much. If the turbo does go soon after you put the chip in, odds are it would have gone without the chip in place. Realize that the turbo is a wear and tear part. Some people will get 150K+ out of the original turbo, while others have gotten less than half that.
One thing you can do to extend the life of your turbo, and your engine, is to switch to synthetic oil. Mobil 1 0W30, 5W30 or 0W40 should work fine.
