Clutch Job?

Clutch Job?
I think my clutch is going. It seems to slip occasionally and then I can smell it burning. It's not that often and I've pretty much been trying to be easy on it. I have 85,500 miles. It's a 2001 1.8TQ Avant.
I am interested in finding out what others have paid for the parts and labor. Brian's Garage said the Clutch Kit is $575 + 10 hours labor, so the total would be about $1175-$1300. That sounded kinda high to me, since I think that's about what the Audi Stealerships wanted.
Is it worthwhile to get any kind of aftermarket clutches? I don't really need performance, but I'd love to have a clutch that can take a little more abuse and be durable in the long run. I haven't chipped or done any other performance mods and I'm not sure if I plan to. I need this car to be reliable as my daily driver.

Re: Clutch Job?
I'm in the same situation. Dealer quoted $2111 for clutch, pressure plate, flywheel and throw-out-bearing. I think its BS. 8 hour installation seems somewhat reasonable and most of the cost is in the labor. I've decided to opt for the AWE Stage 2 clutch/flywheel kit. It comes with all of these parts and is $1000. Local euro repair shop could install for $500-600 so I'll be saving about 500 bucks. Mine right now does not slip very much but engages really high and not very well. PS only have 60k miles on a 2001 1.8TQMS with APR 1.0 bar and turboXs BPV.

Re: Clutch Job?
What's the benefit of going with an aftermarket clutch? Is it simply for the price savings? The shop I go to told me that clutch, with flywheel, would be around $2300. Probably seems high, but everything in California is expensive. Cheers

Re: Clutch Job?
I'm hoping the Stage 2 clutch will be more durable. Supposedly has the same pedal feel as the OEM clutch so it will not be much of a burden to get use to. Flywheel is alot lighter than stock and therefore supposed to feel faster/get more power to the ground. But mainly I see it as a better product for less money.
But I was also pissed because I also need tie-rod ends, cam seals, valve cover gasket, chain tensioner and gasket. Grand total about $4000. Anything to save $$$ is a start!

Re: They all engage insanely high. save your money until it's truly shot.
Everyone says they engage high, but mine use to engage from about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way up. Now, however, I can push the clutch in about an inch for a complete shift, something is not right. And it slips occasionally, and makes horrible noises getting into 1st and 2nd. Like a KTTTCHHHHHH. It's not teeth grinding but it sounds similar. If I'm already getting the suspension and internals worked on why not the tranny as well, gives me an excuse to buy an exhaust. Anyone heard good things about AWE Borla exhaust? The price is right and sounds GREAT.

was this diagnosed by a shop? sounds to me like the hydraulics might be failing. A worn out clutch will slip but it should still disengage when you put the pedal to the floor. There was a rash of clutch master and slave cylinders failing for a while there, maybe that's what is going on with yours.

Re: Clutch Job?
Thats about what it goes for. I've done them and they are an SOB of a job(without a lift that is). Sachs or Valeo make fairly good OEM clutch set-ups. If your keeping the car for another 20-30k, its worth replacing the clutch so it does not waste the syncros in the trans(weak as they are, bad clutch makes the situ worse). Good luck.
