Considering A4

Considering A4
I found a 98 A4 recently with 50000 on it and they are asking 16500 for it. The car has the 2.8 liter. My Audi knowledge is not good and I want to know opinions on the 1.8 turbo versus the 2.8. Pro's and con's. Anything I should consider before trading my VW for an Audi? I am not interested in tuning this car like I have the golf. I realize that I have been doing a lot of things to the golf to try and mak it the car I want. I drove the A4 and fell in love. It is sexy and I wouldn't change a thing to it. Thanks for any help.

I was going to suggest searching, but...
The search engine here seems to be confused when you type in numbers (like 2.8 and 1.8)...
So, as well as I can remember, the pros and cons in comparing the 4-cylinder turbo (1.8t) with the 6-cylinder NA (2.8) go like this:
1.8T:
* stock, it's slower than the 2.8, unless you're at high altitude.
* it's easy to upgrade with a relatively inexpensive chip (and APR offers a nice chip that allows you to switch quickly and easily between the stock and modified programs, so that the dealership won't know that you've chipped it)
2.8:
* typically more luxury-oriented, with leather seats and wood trim (plus I think that a lot of other comfort features are standard on the 2.8, and optional on the 1.8T).
* no turbo, so there's no real warm-up or cool-down issues.
* apparently, a chip for the 2.8 also does wonders, but as far as I know, there's not one that allows you to switch back and forth between modified and stock programs (but I could be wrong).
Both engines are available with manual or Tip. Both engine models are available with sport or non-sport suspensions.

i SWORE i wouldn't touch the tt. i've already spent 500 bucks in mods, and the temp plates are still on...

Quite a step up from a Golf, both 1.8T/2.8 will burn a hole in your wallet if you hang out here...
I stepped up from a VR6 GTI to the 1.8T and didn't miss the 2 cylinders a bit after I added a chip. Sounds like you have just begun to suffer the consequences of the mod bug...you can never ever be finished modding once you have started. And once you think you've finished, you move on to something else...something better. Go ahead, buy it, and enjoy!

Re: "it's sexy and i wouldn't change a thing"
I know...i know. After we got done with the test drive and I got myself together, my girlfriend asked me if I really thought I would "just drive it". I said..."Yeah...I'll lower it when the suspension wears out." You know that after a month of driving...that suspension will suddenly give out. She doesnt care...she knows I'm helpless.
