yeah maybe it will rust from distilled water but tap or fountain water or whatever will rust that same part 10 times faster. I used 1 month tap water ony my clothes iron steamer and it rusted that fast + calcarous deposits. My mom used distilled water and still does and that never happened.

Following manufacturers recommendations never did bad, any slight deviation from its recommendations can have dire consequences in the long or short run.
