you can buy your own syn. oil and take it in to barrier and ask them to use it.. i've done it
before.. in fact the svc. advisor told me to go to target to buy it rather than pay their prices.

Default Mine recommended waiting until 15K mi. before switching to synthetic to ensure proper break-in.

They said they tore down a 1.8T with 26,500 miles on it once that had been switched to synthetic very early in life. I think the reason they were tearing it down was related to overheating, or something completely unrelated to the oil, but they said that when the engine was torn down there was evidence it had not properly broken in, or the rings not properly seated.

That is a good question for the oil companies: How does synthetic oil affect the break-in period of the engine, if at all? Can you provide examples?

I don't know how much stock to put in all of this. I did wait for 15K miles before switching to synthetic, and my 1.8T does not use any noticeable oil between 2500 mile changes. I also waited the full 5000 mi. before my first oil change based on recommendations I have read here. I do remember losing about 1/4 qt. of oil during the latter half of the first 5K miles, but no more after that.
