Default Does your 5-speed grind when cold?

Sorry if this has been covered before, I've just joined the forum and the search engine is down...

Our 2001 A4 2.8 is reluctant to upshift into second or third until the transmission is warmed up. It doesn't actually grind, but comes close. There is physical resistance to slipping into the gear.

Just for the record:
1. I'm referring to outside temperatures around 40 to 50 degrees.
2. I understand that many transmissions shift better warm than cold. My current problem is much more obvious than in any other car that I've owned.

Can someone please tell me whether this is a trait of this gearbox, or something that I should bug the dealer about?

Thanks -- Steve

Default yes

You have to drive a good 25 minutes first from my experiences. There is a fine line between grinding and almost grinding in this gearbox. I'm gonna opt for some TT synthetic gearbox oil. Stock is not synthetic in mine.

Btw @ 20k things are not really different w/ the gearbox.

Default Double clutching for a few miles helps.

Some have success with simply moving around the gears before starting, but if its really cold, I find I need to double clutch.

Default I agree..

Actually that works best at times. Sometimes I'd run through the gears before driving which helps a little although, double clutching has been the most effective at low temps. I plan to change out my fluid at my next service..

Yes...you can change tranny oils to ameliorate the affect.
