Not as easy as domestic vehicles......
mine, for example
W = Germany
AU = Audi
D = Sedan, Quattro
H = 2.8L
2 = L airbag, R airbag, passive restraints (seatbelts), airbags in seat (I think if you have a 6 there, you have curtain airbags too)
8D = B5 A4
9 = check digit
Y = 2000
A = built in Inglostadt
142170 = serial number<ul><li><a href="https://www.audiworld.com/tech/audi1.shtml">https://www.audiworld.com/tech/audi1.shtml</a</li></ul>

This link is for older cars, but you can see it isn't very straightforward
