Default First Big SoCal Rain..found out my wipers suck :)

Especially the left one at the low speed..shimmys and shakes all the way up and down..only goes away if i do high speed which suck cause lots of times the rain is pretty light and don't need that much power. Can the wipers be adjusted so the blade is pressed tighter agains the windshield (this seems to be the proble) Any others experience this? Any recomendations? Check Archives already..Thankx

Default If it has been a long time since it's rained, your wipers will not perform well...

The rubber hardens and gets dirty if the wipers are not used often. Living in Houston, I was surprised beginning a couple of years ago how bad my wipers would perform despite the fact that we had been experiencing relatively dry weather and I hadn't been using my wipers much. Now, unless the wipers are fairly new, it seems to take a couple of hours worth of rainfall within a few day period to get them working good. Then they'll last over a year.

Default Re: same thing

I experienced this week, tried rainx, and cleaned the wipers with alcohol. Still no good, kind of annoyed me. My 3series never had this problem. BTW my car is a 00 1.8 A4 with 2k miles, so the blades are brand new.

Default Ditto for my 99.5 Avant....

Inserts were replaced at the 5k service a few weeks back. They still make a fair amount of noise at the top and bottom of their path; I don't know if this is normal or not.

The original blades didn't see any rain for a good 5 months, when I needed them they were terrible.

Default Only second time my car has seen rain (SoCal)...

...this was 'torrential' by comparison and wipers worked great. I bought it back in September '99 and the wipers have been dry the whole time (except for frequent car washes) I really don't know why you guys have this problem. Did you try rubbing the wiper blades with sandpaper? That usually works to rejuvenate worn wipers.

Default Also, wax...

Problem is that your windshield has likely some wax on it. Park the car somewhere in the dry, apply some window cleaner (20/20 is good, I have my own secret weapons against wax and gunk), and things will improve.
