Default Glowing turbo questions

I have been running with a APR chip in my 2001 A4 1.8T, Q,Tip, for a couple of weeks now. I have seen the turbo glowing on several occasions, the latest being following a 5 mile relatively mild drive. The temp outside is in the mid 30s, so there is plenty of natural cooling. Is it normal for this to happen? Does it also occure with the stock ECU following a hard drive? I never though of checking it before installing the chip. Is it really necessary to allow the car to idle until the glow is gone before shutting it off? What do most of you guys do? Are turbo timers a necessity? What are the potential damages that can occure if I shut down while I'm glowing? Thanks all.

Default yes very necessary..... cool off your car.... remember

with the new chip you will be running more boost so this means your turbo will work harder... let the turbo cool off by running your car at idle... this allows air to naturally cool off the car as well as oil to flow through the turbo to cool off internally.

Default The glow is normal. You DO need to cool your car off while its glowing.

My suggestion is to buy and install a Turbo Timer. It's a lot easier than sitting in your car for 2 minutes everytime you park.

Default Remember to use a nice Synthetic Oil too

I had the same concern, mine would glow on VERY short drives up to the street for Sushi! Don't worry...if you don't have a Turbo Timer use the door chime as a timer. Crack your door and listen to the chime..once it stops thats one minute. Repeat as necessary until you get the timer.

Default Will 2 minutes really be enough?

Is it OK to shut down if there is a slight glow still present?

Default More than enough....I used to just drive conservatively the last few miles....

...and then let it idle for 30 seconds prior tpo shutting off my '97 1.8T (chipped with GIAC). BTW, I always ran synthetic oil (Mobil-1).
