is a turbo timer necessary?
Yes, I did an archive search but couldn't really find any recent information directly related to the '04 or '05 1.8T's.
From the posts I did read, it seems that a timer is needed to let the turbo cool down when you are running something bigger than stock or if you plan on stopping 2-3 miles immediately after boosting hard. I am only running the stock turbo and will most likely not be upgrading. If I do run it hard and need to shut down quickly, how long should I wait for the turbo to cool down?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

its a good thing but not necessary when you dont have mods done
just let the engine chill for a bit before you shut it off if you have any concerns.
if audi thought it was important im sure they would have added it to our cars.
if you had a chip id def get one since they are rather inexpensive.

Not needed even with mods...
I have a larger turbo and many mods. I had a Porsche turbo with a much larger turbo too with no turbo timer. After running hard, (or long trips) just let the car idle for a few mins. as the oil and coolant will lower temps in the bearing of the turbo.
A turbo timer does the same thing.
Look in your owners manual- I belive they say the same thing.
