high miles A4 purchase advice
I'm new here. Never bought an Audi before.
I'm looking at buying HIGH MILES A4 (80-90K)...or even an a 96 A6 (I saw one with impeccable maintanance records). Some people have discouraged me from doing this, but my view is that if you have a one owner A4, the chances that they'll at least keep it up, is better than a college student's used Ford Focus or Mazda Protege with around 45K miles.
I recently found an A4 2.6 with 97K, quattro for around $9700 after haggling. What do you think? I know repais are on the way, but the fun factor seems to balance that price. Any thoughts? much appreciated,
Jose

As I'm sure you realize, buying a higher-mileage car has a lot to do with the previous owner.
One thing is for certain, an Audi is definitely not a Honda. Some Audi's hold up magnificently, others represent a huge outlay of cash to keep going.
That's another matter to consider; maintenance costs are always higher on older cars and for the most part, maintaining an Audi will be more expensive than many other choices.
If you are the type that relies on a shop to handle all but the simplest of tasks, you may be better off in a different vehicle.
You may be able to find a newer A4 with low miles and pick it up for close to 10k. My 1997 for instance is only worth 10-11k, with 63k miles. I'll be hanging on to it probably 'till 100k, as it has so far been a great vehicle, looks great, feels good, and has been reliable.
Anyway, good luck in your hunting. Audi's are nice.

IMHO go for it. You should be very happy with the car if...
you have the resources and attitude to do the proper maintenance. My 97 1.8T has 81k on it and it's been extremely reliable for the last 60k miles or better. Just know parts and service will be higher than with the Ford or Mazda. Make sure you can find a good mechanic near you.

2-Valve V6 only...
Yeah I know the 12V engine is not that great but I think the '96 A6 he's talking about has the same 12V 2.8 V6... so it might be better off to get the A4 which is lighter.
