How does chipping affect the internal components of the 1.8 engine?

How does chipping affect the internal components of the 1.8 engine?
In responce to the recent EC article on chipping, I'm aware that the turbo is running at or above its efficiency range at 1 bar, and will therefore in all probability reduce its lifespan. What are the effects internally on the motor itself?

In crease of boost, adds stress to the gaskets and piston rings...
The rods, and the pistons themselves. Pinging and knocks are potentially more damaging if you get them. Finally, the added HP adds stress to the clutch and transmission.
But is it okay? The parts are generally over designed, especially for the 1.8. There are folks with 50k on a chip. Others track with it routinely. From the time this was Jet's page, I have yet to read about a blown 1.8 engine, or complaints on engine wear that was even remotely chip related. The 1.8 engine is an old design, and is very proven. That one about the exploded S4 was due to other mitigating circumstances (like a driver that didn't know how to manage a powerful car), and isn't a 1.8 based design (obviously).
