Default How many miles can you go on a replaced timing belt system - 1.8T?

So now that I have replaced my timing belt and tensioner components, how long can I go on this replacement? My last belt went to 83k w/ no problems. I will say that the tension on the new belt is much greater. I think my old dampener had seen better days. So can I go 60k, 80k, 100k on the new components?

rule of thumb around here is to replace the timing belt every 65-75k miles

Default It's not the belt that fails, it's the tensioner. Keep that in mind next time you go 23k miles over

what is recommended.

You don't *have* to replace the parts, but replacing 20 some valves isn't exactly cheap either.

Default Yeah, my tensioner wasn't doing a whole lot of tensioning anymore...

The problem with my setup was that the belt had stretched and the tensioner ran out of travel and couldn't push on the idler with much force anymore. All components were intact and the belt had not jumped any teeth, but it was much looser than the new components.

It was my mom's car and it had an easy 83k. I picked up the car from them and I am doing all of the maintenance they didn't feel like paying the dealer to do.

So what you are saying is that Audi didn't update the parts so as soon as you go above 60k everything is suspect (again). Oh joy!

Default Audi did update the parts, and I would not go past 60k.

Why? Timing belt jobs are cheap and easy. Bent valves are not.

If you did not use quality parts ( either Audi or from PureMS ) make that number 30k.
