Default how much added labor time to the timing belt job for waterpump and thermostat?

my mechanic quoted me 4 hours for timing belt, tenionser and roller.

i want him to do those plus
Idler roller
Water Pump With gasket
Wahler OE Thermostat with O-ring
A/C Belt
P/S Belt
Alternator Belt

How much time should that add? as you can see, i'm thinking about getting hte ECS ultimate timing belt kit.

Second question would be, i know these extras are good to do, so i'm thinking of doing them with hte timing belt, but what's the normal life of these parts?

thx

Default pump and thermostat shouldn' t take more than 1 hr and the rest of the belts all of 2 minutes each..

well a bit more than that but you get the point. And just change everything, since you'll already got the front off the car. Belts and pumps can last a long time or die the day after your put it all back together.

Default ok. that makes sense. just got an email quote from my mechanic

and this is what he said:
"The water pump and thermostat job don't overlap all that much but will be
somewhat easier with the covers out of the way.

The job time for the pump is 3.5 and a bit more for the thermostat."

Now, he originally stated 4 hours for the timing belt job (timing belt, roller, tensioner), so i've asked for clarification if the 3.5 he's stating is 3.5 hours on top of that. if so, i think that's ridiculous. these guys have been pretty good to me up till now and i want to give them the benefit of the doubt. just wanted to make sure that what i'm expecting (i'd say a 5-6 hour job tops) isn't something absurd.

thx

Default ok, got a response from my mechanic.

He's quoting 6.5 hours for the full job. They charge $75/hr so it comes out to $487.00. I think that's a little on the high end, but reasonable. I really trust these guys' work, so i think it's worth paying an extra few bucks for that kind of security.

opinions?

Default I don't know really...

I think that's reasonable. Might not be as cheap as some other people have had it done, but it's certainly not outrageous. You could always search the archives to see what people tend to pay. Since I did mine myself, I never shopped around. :-)

Default That sounds about right.

I think Woodlawn told me, worse case if the water pump and thermostat needed to be replaced, that the entire job would be (I forget exact figure) a bit over $700 (certainly no more than $800)

Btw - thanks for the info on German Auto Specialists. I'm in East Norriton, and it's always nice having another option in case of an emergency.

I would have to oil seals replaced as well. I don't know if you're talking about a 1.8T or not, but I just replaced the timing belt w/components, the waterpump and all drive belts about three weeks ago. Mine has 70K miles on it and ALL the front oil seals were leaking. Replaced them too. Not much more work. Good luck.

Default yeah, the guys at German Auto are great. really nice guys.

their main VW/Audi mechanic is a real motorhead and talks way over my head when we talk. hehe. they get lots of A4s and they've seen most of the common issues we all run into.
