Default I don't remember reading this, so I thought I would throw this out there for you 2.8r's

From the April 2001 issue of Motor Age:
Audi 1998-2000 A4, A6 with 2.8L engine
Subject: No-start or hard-start cold with no codes stored in fault memory may be caused by low compression due to carbon build-up that prevents the valves from seating properly. Audi is now installing a hotter thermostat, a revised coolant temparture sensor, different injectors and hotter spark plugs on the production line. The bulletin includes troubleshooting tips and part numbers and also recommends using Decarb Tool Kit US 9025 and Wynn's X-Tend combustion chamber cleaner to restore compression.
