I heard that the HKS BOV is alright to use with non-DBW Audi's. Is there any truth to this?

it's all theory.
the HKS is a sequential valve which is supposed to keep the correct amount of metered air passing through your MAF. This supposly keeps your engine happy and running normal.
The other valves, just have one valve which just opens and vents out all the excess air, letting less air get metered by the MAF. This is why most audi'ers don't like them. By letting less air pass through, the MAF reads less air causing the car to run richer.
They both will cause your car to run richer, and i've yet to see any of these valves throw engine codes when installed properly. you need to adjust the tension so the diaphram closes completely on idle, and imo running a little rich isn't a bad thing.

A small correction
A BPV or BOV is positioned AFTER the MAF. The same amount of air would be metered by the MAF regardless of using a BOV or BPV. The BOV vents some of the metered air into the atmosphere causing the car to run richer because the ECU has already calculated the amount of fuel based on(among other things) the MAF readings. A BPV keeps that air in the system.

Re:Even worse on non-dbw...
get ready for a rough ride while coming to a stop. If you stop to fast your car will even stall out. Non-dbw just uses a MAF to calculate the correct mix.
DBW uses a MAF and also a MAP sensor which has predetermined maps to run the car off set programs. The MAF adjust to current conditions.
Some dbw people have good success running just off a MAP sensor but under certain conditions the cars air/fuel will be off.
