My remotes don't work, so I tried to reprogram them (did the whole "put one key in the ignition and turn it on, lock the car with the other key," etc.). I have a 1997 A4 1.8T.

as long as the batteries are all ok and not all 4 remote spaces in central locking are filled,it's not hard.turn ignition on with valet key, lock door, push unlock on #1 remote[lights flash once]and hold for 5 seconds, let go for 5 seconds, press unlock again, door pin should pop up.lock door again, press unlock on remote #2 twice[lights flash twice[hold for 5 seconds, let button go for 5 seconds, hit unlock again, door pin pops up.remove key fron ignition, close door, test, etc.note;if all channels arte filled, you have to clear the memory.to clear the memory, turn ignition on,lock door, press unlock button on remote 5 times, let go for 1 second, then press unlock once, now the memory is cleared

Nope, I *just* did this today as a matter of fact.
Here's what I did:
1. One key in the ignition to the ON position
2. Lock the door from the outside with the 2nd key.
3. Press the unlock button ONCE on the 2nd key fob (lights blink once, horn might honk). Doors should NOT unlock at this point.
4. Unlock and then lock the door again with the 2nd KEY from the outside
5. Now press the unlock button on the 2nd key fob, doors should unlock.
If you've followed these steps to the letter, then I don't know what to tell you. This procedure worked on my current remotes and the new switchblade key I just got. Good luck

Does it matter that I don't have "switchblade" keys (I just have "regular" keys)
Also, by "turn on the ignition," do you mean just turn the key, or actually start the engine?

Still doesn't work
Basically, when I turn on the ignition, lock the car and press the "unlock" button on the remote, nothing happens. No horn, no lights, nothing. Doesn't matter if I just press it or hold it. (By the way, when I normally lock my car with the key, I only get a confirmation "honk" from the car, but no lights flash. Is this normal?)
