My dealer told me no leak on my car when I know for a fact I've seen weat spots under there. And also some spots on the skid plate, on the passenger side so the spots are not likely oil spillage since the fill is on the driver side.
He told me the spots are cosmoline, so stuff they put on the engine even though it is a 98.5 and was put into service over 4 years ago?? What's the deal people with this cosmoline stuff.

Nasty thick jelly that keeps pretty much everything out. Did not know they used it on cars...
Military Equipment was shipped in cosmoline during WWII. Don't know if they still use it.

Ohhh....i may know! Is it that wax stuff, audi sprays around the engine bay..Over time and heat
That stuff melts and runs all over the place...When it melts, it does appear like an oil leak...I got this wax melting behind my head lights. Its melting all over the wire harness..it looks like someone dumped a Qt of oil....

Cosmoline
\Cos"mo*line\ (k?z"m?-l?n), n. [Prob. fr. cosmetic + L. oleum oil.] (Chem.) A substance obtained from the residues of the distillation of petroleum, essentially the same as vaseline, but of somewhat stiffer consistency, and consisting of a mixture of the higher paraffines; a kind of petroleum jelly.

Did you by chance touch the wet spots to see what kind of liquid it was?
It could be something simple like the condensation draining off from the AC, or maybe a little oil seepage (normal supposedly) The Cosmoline would have likely been melted off by now if it was going to.

Thank you Kris for posting :-) more....
I read the archives and saw you have some knowledge on this. I'm leaving now to get the car and will go home jack it up and take pics if you would graciously look at them tomorrow.
I can't remember it's been awhile but I remember it being greesy or oily. Dark in color. I think it tranny fluid oil from my experiences. Hopefully they didn't wipe it all down at the dealer today and I can find some.
Oh and one other thought. My car is a 98 but only has 36K on it. since this stuff burns off and my car has realtively low miles for the age....think it could still be some of this stuff?
