That's on the high side, but not completely unheard of.
I've paid $400 @ PES for S&S installs. $150 @ dealer for alignments. Dealer prices will be slightly higher.
Independent mechs will do the work for as little as $200, however most don't have the proper alignment equipment. Dealer rates on alignments will vary between $75-150.
My best advice to you...shop around.

My previous mechanic would have charged me less than $200 while I waited
But he was pretty cool and once let me borrow a socket (triple square 8mm) so I could do the axles on my porsche.
Of course I spent a couple gran with him so he liked me.

Anyone can do it.
There's nothing special about the Audi suspension. It does not require any special tools or knowledge.
I've been doing them for years, and they're really not difficult.
Price is a tad on the high side, but it does seem to vary with location.

Or perhaps its because it's hard to schedule "in and out" times with the shop?
Spend a little time at your dealer, and you'll see the number of unexpected things that come up during the course of a day. People drop by unannounced to get a headlight replaced, or a wiper blade changed. Wrong parts may have come in, and the dealer is left scrambling to get the part from another local dealer. Rusted bolts can eat up 20-30 minutes alone. Sometimes a two hour job on a car can end up being a 4 hour job, and sometimes a 4 hour job can end up being a 2 hour job. In the end, a well managed shop will anticipate these things, so over the course of a 9 hour day, with 5-7 techs, they will manage to get everything done as promised. But when people schedule to bring their car in at noon for a 4 hour job, it throws a wrench into the works. It's hard to anticipate every little thing that might happen, and still get the customer out the door at 4PM. If they tried to do this, they would err on the side of having techs sitting around holding their wrenches, just so they could meet delivery times promised to customers.
My dealership will book jobs that are less than 2 hours on a date and time basis at your convenience. If the job is any longer, they provide a loaner, and request that you leave the car for the day, so they don't have to unnecessarily inconvenience you. It has little to do with hiding billing rates and real time rates from the customer. It's widely accepted that they use book rates, regardless of whether the actual time exceeds the book time or not.
Dealers are not the only one's that employ this practice. Most independent mechanics will insist on the same, for the very same reasons. Customers tend to get pissed off when the car can't be delivered in the promised amount of time.
