Default K03 damage... posting for godzilla =)

Recently, I realized that the rattling sound coming from the right front of my car was the wastegate going south on me. This was confirmed when I had the catalytic converter taken off so that Clandestine Hardware could repair a broken 02 mounting bung and mounting flange. I reached my hand in the back of the turbo and could wiggle the wastegate.

The decision was made to install a K04, and a turbo was found with the help of Paul_858.

Once I removed the old turbo, with the help of Paul_858 and ALAN_ONE, we saw something verrry scary.

The exhaust side was cracked all the way through. You can see the cracks in the pictures below. Also, there was a crack around the wastegate hole. It doesn't show in the pictures, but the crack on the outside of the housing ran at least halfway around the turbo.

What caused this? The wastegate failure is a known problem with these K03s, it's quite common. The cracks were probably caused by me. I've been fiddling with my exhaust and had it hanging in such a way that created a lot of stress on the turbo and the cat. Hence, the cracks in the turbo and the broken cat. Moral of the story.....let someone who knows what they're doing install the exhaust.

Even with all these problems on the turbo, I was still seeing 1.1 bar peak boost.

Default Question.....

When did he get the rattling noise, with lift off of throttle? Also, was he still making power?

I've got a rattle that occurs when I lift the throttle but I'm still making power. Havent figured out if it's the turbo or cat yet.

Default I've seen a lot of damage due to poorly installed exhaust.....

99/100 times, it's usually the cat flange that separates from the cat though, not the turbo cracking. Make sure you replaced the oil feed line & heat shield with that turbo....

Default The rattling noise came off throttle....

It didn't matter if the car was under load or not. It still made power up high, but there was less power at lower rpm's.

Default Sounds like exactly what's wrong with mine....

Just giving the car some gas in neutral will cause the rattle when I lift the throttle. Will have to look at when the boost is coming on full when I drive to work tomorrow. Glad I decided to go stage 3 I guess
