Need help......engine warning light

My wife just called and said her engine warning light just came on in her '99 A4. Told her to check the owner's manual, but she could not find an explanation for the light. Any ideas as to what triggers the engine light in an A4. Additionally, just had some body work done to rear of car and dealer had to replace A4 symbol. New one has a backwards 4, which the dealer claims is new for 2001. What gives?

As long as the light is not blinking, and the car is running fine, the light should go out by itself within the next day or two.

Thanks for the info. Do you know what made the light go on and why does it go off after a few days?

According to my manual (2001 MY) the engine light, in the speedo comes on and stays on it's the On Board Diagnostic System telling you something is wrong with the engine, WOW, go figure? It says if it's blinking it means it could be the catalytic converter. The manual, again MY 2001 p.116 here, says it's ok to continue driving at reduced speed, but take it to the dealer right away.

BTW my A4 is NOT backwards, and I looked at about 15 before choosing this one last weekend, not backwards A4's did I see.
