I had a quick look see for you and found some recommendations here:

The consensus seems to be JHM.

If you still want to convince yourself further do an advanced search using “short shifter” as the key words and then select your B5 on the right and hit Search Now. You won’t come up “short” on further threads.

Decisions, decisions, decisions .

Good Luck with yours .

I liked the UUC SS I had in my '98. It was a bit fiddly to install (I think that's par for the course), but I really liked the feel of it.

I've not tried the JHM, but have heard plenty of good things.

Since you've already got a short shifter, pair it up with the JHM solid linkage upgrade and stabilizer bushing. That will tighten it up nicely

Check out JHMotorsports.com. They've got the stabilizer bushing kit and the solid linkage upgrade available to order separately. I had originally installed a Stratmosphere SS, then changed it out for a Dieselgeeks SS. The DG shifter gave a much better feel (likely due to the pivot ball being larger), but it still felt rubbery b/c the oem bushings had worn out. I got the bushing kit and the improvement was more dramatic than going from OEM to the aftermarket short shifter; definitely worth the 30 bucks. I was going to wait until after Christmas to get the solid linkage upgrade, but I may pull the trigger in the next couple of weeks.
