Default New to Audi's - question about A4 and timing belt

I'm looking at a 99 A4 2.8 5sp. He says the timing belt broke when he was starting the car, but it never actually started. First, is that likely? If so, what are the chances that more than 1 cylinder's valves are bent? I've redone timing belts and the rest of front of a Porsche 944 motor, so I'm not beyond doing the work myself, but I'd like to get a feel for what I may be up against before I make any offers.

Any feed back would be appreciated.

Thanks

Timing belt on the 2.8 is easy mine broke on my while I was driving but I nvr got any bent valves or anything. I dont know if I got lucky or not but the job shouldnt take more than 2 hrs tops. just know **you will be removing the whole front end and putting the car in service mode** its a fun job if you've never done it before I think the hardest thing IMO is putting car back into time. I just used the TDC technique with it and that seems to work just fine.

Your 96 is SOHC and I really doubt 2 hours for that. It probably takes almost an hour to remove the front end and drain the coolant. The water pump and tensioner are what fails not the belt.

I think 2 hours is even more optimistic for a 30 valve DOHC V6 with all the seals etc.

Shop time is about 5 hours. And there is a lot more stuff to break on that motor if the belt failed.

idk about a 30v id hate to find out...lol but my first time took me forever because I didnt know what to do and didnt have ALL the right tools so I had to do a couple things ghetto plus I couldnt get the thing timed again which was a definate FML moment haha anyways to the original poster GL on your problem its really not too bad of a job compared to some of the other things when they fail

Maybe a more specific question is. If the belt or tensioner fails, are some valves alway bent or is their a chance - especially since it occurred when starting as opposed to at 2-3k rpm - that it may have escaped bending any.

Looking on Wikipedia it seems that in 99 it would have been the 30 value motor.

Thanks

No way of knowing, people have bent valves when doing the timing belt change incorrectly. Unlikely that all 30 are bent though.

You could probably pick up a used motor for around $1000.

A dealer is going to estimate $4-7K an independent a little less.

Car is not worth that much wholesale even if was running..

I would offer no more than $2500 even if the rest of the car is nice. Cars with problems are hard to sell, and the lack of action on the belt shows poor judgment and may indicate additional differed maintenance.

the 30 valve engine will generally bend the exhaust valves probably not more then 6 but anything is possible. I bought one last fall that skipped time 2 or 3 teeth, nothing bent, but one more tooth would have taken out the valves, ti also depends on what skipped, crank, or cams? I am rebuilding a 3.0 that the crank skipped, bent 6 intake and 2 exhaust valves. It took 5 hrs to pull the heads on the 3.0, but it is a much harder engine it has a few bolts that are buggers to reach!!! I can do a 2.8 in 8-10 hrs start to finish, including replacing and grinding valves and cleaning parts.ECS tunning has great prices on Valves, you need to call them though since they are not on their web. I expect to get my parts today for the 3.0
