Default New to modding

I have just getting interested in modding my 2001 A4 1.8t. However I know basically nothing about engines and need to learn. Where should I start? I had asked if there was a book that gave a break down of my car describing what the parts are and what they do in a earlier post but never got a strait answer. Here are some of the things that I would like to learn how to do.
Install a short through shifter.
decrees the turbo lag.
increase HP.
As I said before I found Greedspeed.com which as some parts for my car but not knowing much about engines I don't know where these parts go. Foe example they have a VW.OEM TT Bypass Valve which they say should be upgraded. But I can't find it in my car to see if I need to do that or not. Any and all help is appreciated thanks.

Default I think my advice should come first

Go to the library.

Get lots of books from the automotive section (for free, at that). Learn how an engine works. Learn how a transmission, fuel injection, turbochargers, exhaust systems work.

Then read the FAQ. It sounds like you're pretty much starting from zero here, and before you waste your time and money, you should do some research. Remember, no one is born with knowledge.

Default chip,exhaust,by-pass valve,suspension....

the short shifter should come with instructions. Pretty easy job switching them. I bought a lot of parts out of Greedspeed years ago when they used to be really cheap. No complaints about service or product with them.
